Lumen Foods' logo Food Storage Principles

T Lumen Foods'
Super Pailhe fundamental principles of proper long term food storage are available not just at soybean.com, but elsewhere.
In fact, a number of good web sites and newsgroups have information available, which is important. After all, despite our best efforts to develop a complete, comprehensive line of long-term storable foods, it is doubtful that you will have all your needs fulfilled by one company only. For variety's sake, it isn't even necessarily a good idea.
So, in the name of keeping our customers informed of what they need to know if they are going to observe good food storage practices, we provide the following comprehensive material for your review.

  • Prudent Food Storage - by Alan Hagan [frame version]
Both these versions are a little over 320K, so please be patient as it loads.
Individual Preparation - Patty O'Riley (Cassandra Project)
Y2K Citizen's Action Guide (Utne Reader)

Because of Hagan's depth, detail, and the sheer number of his buying sources, some consider this the "mother of all food storage papers." If it isn't, it sure comes pretty close. O'Riley's report is less detailed in the food front, but is an excellent cross reference. We HAVE edited some material, using Lumen Foods' own extensive background and expertise in food science. Hagan's work is Version 3.0 (Sept. 98 edition). We have made small revisions to both works for the benefit of our readers. Since Hagan's treatise is VERY LONG, we've taken the time to break the Table of Contents and their many articles into a frames version for those of you (which should be most) who are using browsers that support frames. Lastly, we've recently the full link to the Utne Reader's Y2K Citizen's Action Guide (which includes O'Riley's report). It contains a number of particularly rare and helpful articles on the importance of working within community, with and without food storage as the primary consideration.

  • Anatomy of a Well-Prepared Super Storage Pail
With the high cost of putting nourishing, life-sustaining foods in #10 cans, other alternatives that are as effective have come to the fray. Lumen Foods reveals its own latest techniques for preserving its own Y2K meal systems.

  • Oxygen Absorbers
Despite their ubiquitous presence in today's food storage business, most people know little about oxygen absorbers. Lumen Foods uses the Mitsubishi's Ageless line of oxygen absorbers to extend shelf-life of its Y2K products, primarily the ZPT-500E (500 cc.) unit in our Y2K meal systems. You can purchase the ZPT-500E product from our Virtual Store for use in your own private Y2K food storage applications (find under "U.S. World Foods" link of the catalog). The cost is just relatively low and the product is packaged in convenient-to-use pouches of 50 units each. The page links below will help you learn (1) what they are and how they're used, (2) view data that confirm their efficacy, and (3) how much you'll need.

    • Mitsubishi's Ageless Brochure -- This page is a table of contents of Mitsubishi's comprehensive review of their remarkable product. From there you can link to over 20 fact-filled color pages, covering everything from preventing microbial growth to the complete elimination of insects. A must read if you're going to get involved with oxygen absorbers... regardless of the source.

  • Silverado pump Silverado Preparedness
Food and water are at the top of the list when preparing for a natural disaster (Y2K, or any other). Several emails we received reflected people's concern about getting water from their deep well in the event of power outage. We were so impressed with Silverado's mechanical solution to obtain water from deep wells that we're providing this link to our visitors. Using Silverado's solution, you don't need a backup generator, or even batteries to get your well water. Just a moderately strong arm!

  • Advice from FEMA
It's sometimes the inclination for some of our customers to compare our advice to that given by any one of a number of government agencies. In this case, we plucked a short missive given by FEMA (Federal Emergency Management Agency). It's short... and to the point.
